The Case For Probiotics

During my research for my book “No More Tears Colic Relief” I came across many theories for the cause of baby colic. There is no definitive answer but one of the theories supported by many of the baby health professionals I interviewed was that colic was the result of an immature gut.

"Babies are born with very little good and bad bacteria in their gastrointestinal tracts and there is a great deal of evidence to support the use of probiotics to support immune function, decrease allergies and help break down food."

So, many babies are just incapable of digesting all the milk flowing down their digestive tracts. It would also explain why overfeeding a baby can make colic worse because the basic problem of immature gut is compounded by the challenge of making the gut work even harder.

Supplying extra gut flora in the form of Qiara is an attempt to boost the ability of the gut to digest the milk and encourage the earlier maturity.

Many babies are slow to build their individual Microbiome which is the bacterial community that lives in and on their bodies. It is crucial to have high levels of beneficial bacteria for this community to function effectively.

breastfeeding provides essential nutrients for growth and specific probiotic bacterial strains essential for healthy digestion, immune system development and neurodevelopment

In some mums the breastmilk probiotic levels can be compromised by the use of antibiotics during pregnancy, birth and lactation. This could be why up to 70% of Caesar babies may develop colic symptoms.

we recommend the use of Qiara - a unique probiotic containing Lactobacillus Fermentum CECT5716 which is isolated from human breast milk.

Qiara comes in two forms:

Qiara Adult which is taken by mums in pregnancy and during lactation to suppress the bacteria that causes mastitis and it also inhibits the development of Staphylococcus and Clostridia. Taken for the first 12 months of breastfeeding, it helps to lay the foundations for healthy infant development, digestive function and nervous system and immune function.

Qiara Infant is designed for supplementation of bottle fed babies who do not receive direct probiotics contained in breast milk. It serves the same purpose as Adult Qiara but is given directly to the baby via bottle feeding. It can also be given to breastfed colicky babies to hasten the maturity of the digestive system.
